Alabama Rivers Workshop – Lee County Historical Society

If you are coming in far from town and need lodging, requests must be submitted before July 1!

Calling all educators, outreach and Extension specialists, classroom teachers and volunteers who work with 4th-12th grades!

SAVE THE DATE for a new workshop series based on AWW Founder Dr. Bill Deutsch’s new book, Alabama Rivers, A Celebration and Challenge. The workshop will cover a brand-new curriculum based on the book, and will cover natural and human history, geology, geography, and many more topics as they relate to Alabama’s rivers. More information on venues and registration coming soon.

This workshop will include a Stream Biomonitoring Certification through Exploring Our Living Streams: Stream Biomonitoring.

When: July 18-19, 2019

Where: Lee County Historical Society Pioneer Park, Loachapoka, AL

Registration Fee: $35

With Registration Fee, Participants Receive:

  • Certification as a facilitator of the Alabama Rivers workshop curriculum
  • Copy of Alabama Rivers, A Celebration and Challenge by Dr. Bill Deutsch
  • Book reading guide/companion curriculum
  • Access to supplemental online digital resources
  • Continuing Education Units from Auburn University
  • Support with the implementation of the curriculum and activities
  • Programs specific to workshop host environmental centers (including floats, boat tours, and more!)
  • Food and lodging during the workshop

General Workshop Agenda:

Day 1 – Thursday, July 18

10 AM – 5 PM 

Programming will include:

• Overview of Alabama Rivers: A Celebration & Challenge

• Instruction on how to use The Educator’s Guide to Alabama Rivers

• Demonstration on select lessons and activities from the Guide

9:30 am Registration @ Pioneer Park

12:00 pm Lunch (Provided)

5:00 pm Adjourn

Day 2 – Friday, July 19

9 AM – 4 PM

Programming will include:

· Introduction to Exploring Our Living Streams (EOLS) and monitoring with students

· Demonstration on select lessons and activities from EOLS

· Stream bioassessment in the field

· Continuation of select lessons and activities from the Educator’s Guide to Alabama Rivers

9:00 am Welcome and Introductions

12:00 Lunch

1:30 pm Stream Biomonitoring in the Field

4:00 pm Adjourn
